Great Roseland Food!

There are two great culinary reasons for visiting The Roseland this season. As well as all the great Cornish pubs in the area using fresh local produce, Rosevine near Portscatho now offers some real treats. 

The Hidden Hut on Porthcurnick beach underwent a major revamp last season when local's Jemma & Simon took over the running of the once beach shop, now gourmet extravaganza! 

The beach hut is open daily during the main season offering light lunches, local organic ice creams, a huge variety of homemade cakes/pastries (courtesy of Maggie, Jemma's Mum), and hot & cold drinks. But what makes this hut extra special is the night life...

On certain evenings throughout the summer they host 'feast nights'. Simon, a professional chef & skilled fishmonger cooks al fresco on huge paella pans over gas, wood-fire and charcoal. There's not much he can't rustle up in a paella pan! 

All events up to the end of June are already sold out. This is hardly surprising when you could be sat on the edge of the beach, looking out over Gerrans Bay, with a glass of something cold (BYO booze, crockery/cutlery and rugs!) snacking on Fowey River Mussels, with coconut chilli, or Lobster with handcut chips! The food is amazing, the views are stunning; quite simply there's no place like it. New for 2012 is Beach Tapas! Their new standard lunchtime offering. This is in addition to ad hoc BBQ's and Soup Sunday's. 

The Hidden Hut is proving massively popular this year, they have a great website where you can book tickets for events (they sell out in a matter of days!) and join their newsletter for notification of new events. We wholeheartedly recommend a visit, even if just for some tea and cake after a hard day on the coastal path. They are open Tues-Sat 10am-5pm and Sundays from 12-3pm. 

Just up the road at the Driftwood Restaurant you will find a thoroughly well deserved Michelin Star. Head Chef Chris Eden is the first Cornishman to receive a Michelin Star in Cornwall, and we couldn't be happier for him! The restaurant also holds three rosette's with truly stunning views across the sea. A short footpath from the hotel leads down to a beautiful secluded beach away from the crowds.

The Driftwood Restaurant promises wonderful fish and shellfish from Cornish Waters and locally reared meats. Their sample menu includes Poached Ray Wing, Saddle Back Pork Loin, Turbot, Sea Bass and Whole Local Lobster, followed by Tregothnan Lemon Verbena Sorbet, or Spiced Pineapple Carpaccio amongst a whole host of other delicious dishes.

All in all, the Roseland is turning into foodie heaven. When you include great pubs such as the Roseland Inn, Philleigh, The Quarterdeck at the Nare Hotel and The Watch House Restaurant in St Mawes, you could have a culinary extravaganza every night of the week!

Corner Cottage, St Mawes

We don't often write about individual properties (do let us know if you would like us to!), but Corner Cottage in St Mawes is offering a lot this year...


Firstly there is a £100 discount on full week bookings taken before the end of April 2012. Perfect for enjoying the fabulous weather we are experiencing at the moment. The cottage welcomes up to two dogs at no additional charge, a rarity in Cornwall these days. As well as benefiting from two car parking spaces, which is incredibly useful in St Mawes as the majority of properties don't have parking and you have to pay to use the village car park. So all in all, you could be saving up to £190 by staying at Corner Cottage.


The cottage is used frequently by the owners so has everything in place you would require. Due to their own requirements, there are short breaks of 4 nights available in certain weeks in the latter half of the season. Again a rare thing in St Mawes as most properties are only available for 7 night stays.

Corner Cottage is a Friday changeover located a few minutes walk away from the centre of the village sleeping up to 5 people. The main double room benefits from views of the sea. There is a good sized lounge with open fire and 3 large sofas, as well as a patio garden & BBQ at the front of the property. 


St Mawes is a fantastic cornish village on the south coast; the highlight of the Roseland Peninsula. There are numerous pubs and restaurants all within easy walking distance. As well as a well stocked local shop, butchers, bakery and gift shops. You can take the foot ferry from St Mawes to the larger town of Falmouth on a short 20 minute trip, for a visit to the National Maritime Museum Cornwall or Pendennis Castle.

Bank Holiday Weekend and Whitsun Half Term Availability

On the beautiful Roseland Peninsula we have just 9 properties available for the Whitsun Bank Holiday.

In St Mawes, the most popular of all the villages on the Roseland we have Bosun's Locker sleeping two tucked away in a wonderfully quiet spot just off the sea front. The River House sleeps 6 people with stunning sea views, in a reverse level house. Tantallon in St Just in Roseland offers great accommodation for seven people with views of the River Fal across to Mylor.

In Portscatho, a smaller well stocked village, Hillside Cottage right in the centre of the village sleeps 5 people. Harbour Court, perfect for a couple looking to get away for the week. Merrose Barn on the outskirts of the village at Trewithian is a wonderful base for a family of four looking to explore.

Vineyard Cottage is an immaculate reverse level one bedroom property set in rolling country near Treworga. Ardevora Vean offers a couple a relaxing holiday set behind Philleigh, with nearby farm land and estuaries to explore.

In Tregony Coopers Cottage is ideally placed for exploration of Mid to East Cornwall. Especially The Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan.

Late availability and seasonal discounts on the Roseland

The Roseland Peninsula has some fabulous hidden gems and now they're offering seasonal discounts for holidays before the middle of July.

The Watch House is an immaculately presented 3 bedroom apartment set in the heart of the picturesque village of St Mawes with views of the Harbour and bay from every room. They are offering a seasonal discount to week long bookings of £150, along with late availability discounts you could have a weeks holiday for as little as £78 per person!

Also in St Mawes offering £100 seasonal discount are Wiggy's Cottage and Pirate Cottage. Wiggy's Cottage is an adorable old fisherman's cottage only moments from St Mawes Harbour, full of character and has been tastefully renovated by the owners, sleeping 5 people parking for one car. Pirate Cottage was completely refurbished during the winter of 2010/11; this substantial village house is tucked away on a quiet lane in the centre of St Mawes, literally a few steps from the harbour. Near Portscatho two barn conversation offer families with peace and quiet and countryside to explore. Merrose Barn is a delightful & very comfortable and well equipped barn conversion to the north of Portscatho, close to the little village of Rosevine. You can walk to the delightful and quiet Cugurrel Beach in just over 10 minutes where you can also join the Coast Path. Polhendra Barn has been sympathetically converted by the Owners to provide an outstanding 2 bedroom holiday home with a large patio area and views over fields from the garden. This barn conversation sleeps 5, and allows pets at a small additional charge.

Falmouth Oyster Festival 2010

Falmouth Oyster Festival 2010 takes place between this week from the 14th to the 17 October 2010 celebrating the start of the Oyster dredging season. The four day Falmouth Oyster Festival takes place on Events Square next to the Maritime Museum Falmouth, attracting in the region of 27,000 visitors. The Oyster festival kicks off with a cookery masterclass from Valentine Warner of the BBC2 series "What to eat now". Wine from Walter Hicks and ale from Skinners Brewery will feature highly during the festival.

St Michaels Hotel & Spa are this years main sponsors of the Falmouth Oyster Festival. Their chefs will be demonstrating throughout the event as well as running the Seafood & Oyster Bar with the fishermen who are supplying their catch for use during the festival. The following week St Michaels Hotel & Spa host the Oyster Ball, a four course event with all the best entertainment and dancing.

With cookery demonstations throughout the oyster festival as well as a Grand Oyster Parade, sea shanties, live music and children's shell painting, there is something there for everyone. Chefs include Fergus Coyle from Rick Stein's Fish and Chips, Dale McIntosh from The Pandora Inn, Restronguet, and amongst others Nick Hodges, Executive Chef at The Flying Fish Restaurant at St Michael's Hotel & Spa. On the final day, Sunday 17th October, the Falmouth Working Boat fleet will race in the harbour, a spectacular sight even from St Mawes.

Tea & Chocolate evening at Smugglers Cottage, Tolverne

Smugglers Cottage, Tolverne are hosting a Tea and Chocolate gastro evening on Saturday 9th October from 4pm. Smugglers Cottage was extensively renovated at the beginning of this year when the Newman family retired after more than 70 years. Tregothnan Estate, home to the Boscawen family since 1335, were the first to grow tea in the UK over 200 years ago, and now produce 14 different teas on the Estate.

The evening will begin with a tea and chocolate-infused cocktail and continue into a 2 hour Tea and Chocolate tasting masterclass with award winning chocolatier Marc Demarquette and Tregothnan's tea expert Jonathon Jones.

Following the masterclass you have the option of staying for a three course menu prepared by Smugglers Cottage head chef Carl Paparone. Each course will combine the flavours of Tregothnan Tea and chocolate matched with wines from the Smugglers Cellars.

Smugglers Cottage, Tolverne is situated on the Fal estuary in an amazing location. You can reach the tea rooms and restaurant by road or by water. Mooring along side the private pontoon is permissible for patrons. The views across the water are unique and well worth a visit.
